Avoid Toxins: Top 10 Tips For Healthy Skin

avoid toxins

Top 10 tips to avoid toxins in you daily life

We live in a fast paced world that relies on mass production.  At Crave Aesthetics in London Ontario we are focused on the slow down, the moral, the take a pause for a bit approach.  When we put too much stress on our plate we sometimes don’t have the time to make the best decisions.  The key is to set our environment up in an optimal way so that when we are busy we have everything we need at our threshold.

It is not realistic or healthy to change everything all at once.  Our guide to avoid toxins should gradually be introduced into your life at your own discretion and with your own judgement.  We go over 10 ways you can make your environment healthier for your body and skin.  By avoiding toxins you prevent aging, oxidative stress and prevent disease.  When your skin shows signs of inflammation this could mean there is a toxin overload that your liver, kidneys, stomach, or other body systems cannot handle.  There are many reasons that contribute to a weak immune system and skin breakouts like stress, alcohol and other lifestyle choices. We are here to provide insight into new ways your can make your body and environment friendlier to your health and your skin.

Check out our top 10 tips to avoid toxins!

Tip #1 - Use Glass Containers

Our body can contain a build up of microplastics which causes various issues within the body.  It is important to use glass or other containers that do not pose the risk of contaminating food with microplastics or PFA’s which are called “forever chemicals”.  These are man made chemicals that are hard to break down.  We recommend avoiding plastic storage as much as possible.

Tip #2 - Filter Drinking Water & Cooking Water

This may seem very labour intensive, but our owner Jessica filters all drinking and cooking water.

Filtering water removes larger particles and contaminants such as flouride, microplastics, arsenic and other chemicals.  Proper filters to not target minerals, only these harmful substances.  It was hard for us to find a system that removed as many harmful compounds without compromising minerals.  The filtration system Jessica uses personally is Clearly Filtered.  We are not affiliated with Clearly Filtered nor are we endorsing them we have just found such a difference in the quality of there water.  Check out their website to research their approach and technology

Boiling Water kills harmful bacteria, viruses and parasites.  We filter our water before boiling to ensure contaminants are removed prior.  We feel confident in this practice.  We do not have time to boil our drinking water then filter it but by focusing on as much filtration you are way further ahead with toxin avoidance.  Also be aware of where you live, such as a golf course.  These courses use pesticides to keep up their grounds.  These pesticides seep into nearby water sources.  If you are concerned please get your water tested.

Tip #3 - Use Stainless Steel Water Bottles

We recommend using stainless steel water bottles for the same reason we suggest using non-plastic food containers.  Stainless Steel Water bottles do not leach harmful chemicals into your water.  Make sure the bottle is wide enough to clean easily.  You must clean your water bottle after each use to avoid bacteria.  If a water bottle is too hard to clean, moisture can cause bacteria.  We suggest purchasing a wider bottle or cleaning tools your feel confident in.

Tip #4 - Eat Organic As Much As Possible

We know this is really hard, especially in today’s day in age. Our soil diversity has changed.  Mass production has caused issues in the quality of our food.  We recommend sourcing out local veggie farmers and meat suppliers that have organic, grass fed practices to avoid unnecesary toxins.  Our two favourites are MULBERRY MOON in Strathroy and ARNOLD’S FAMILY FARM on Brigham Rd, London Ontario (just past Lambeth, Ontario).

We buy the majority of our Organic Vegetables at Mulberry Moon; depending on their seasonal offerings and all of Boneless Skinless Chicken at Arnold’s Family Farm.

Both businesses are family run.  They personally value and care deeply about organic and honourable practices.  I am very thankful to have found them.

My weekly goal is to buy veggies at the farm but if I can’t make it out I buy organic veggies at my local preferred grocery store.

We are aware Organic is not always possible budget wise so you can make a plan of the most important foods that you would like to consume organically.  If you drink alot of coffee, try to find coffee that is myotoxin tested if possible.  In your search you can put in “mold free coffee” or “myotoxin free coffee”.  If the company is serious about clean coffee they will most likely have sourced out third party testing.  You can check for this wording under the description of the coffee. If you drink decaf, try to opt for coffee that has undergone the Swiss Water Process.  This process uses water instead of chemicals to decaffeinate the coffee beans.  Coffee brands that are dedicated to these practices are your best option.

Tip #5 - Choose Paraben Free Skincare

Our owner Jessica has been using Paraben Free Skincare for 15 years.  Focus on Natural and Organic has evolved alot.  There have been many advancements in the skincare industry with knowledge on unique compounds that sooth your skin naturally.  Natural skincare typically has a shelf life of 6 months which is amazing.  This means it is void of lipid/water binders, formaldehyde inhibitors and the unnecessary chemicals needed for longer shelf life stability.

Nature provides many antioxidants and nutrients for your skin and body.  In the pursuit of offering the best natural skincare line we were overjoyed to have found DELIZIOSO.  Delizioso’s owners, Ariel and Leeona make hand batched artisan natural skincare in London Ontario.  Their mother is a chemist who made natural skincare formulation and other compound for skincare companies and other industries.  When they were young they were exposed to the wonderment of healing plants and natural compounds.  Delizioso was born in 2008 with the desire to create a brand that was truly green, luxurious and made with scientifically tested ingredients. To read more, check out their STORY.

We use craft custom natural facials with Delizioso products and retail these amazing products.  We provide our clients with curated home care routines with ingredients that compliment their skin.  Our favourite ingredients that Delizioso uses is Sea Buckthorne.  This fruit naturally contains omega 3, 6, 7 & 9.  It is chalk full of vitamins and antioxidants and is naturally anti inflammatory and nourishing.  We love Delizioso.  We are proud to be partnered with them.

Tip #6 - Use Stainless Steel / Non Toxic Cookwear

As with stainless steel water bottles, stainless steel cookware is alot safer.  Using stainless steel, ceramic and cast iron are your healthiest options.  For frying pans it is harder to use stainless steel as food sticks easier.  But this can be remedies with proper cooking techniques.  Once you have chosen your provide cook wear it is important to do research on how to cook with it and maintain its integrity.  If you are looking for a non toxic frying pan look for companies that do not use PFA’s.  These man made chemicals are toxic to the body and environment.  We suggest doing your research to find a solution that best suits your budget, health and cooking style.

Tip #7 - Look for textiles with OEKO -TEX Certification

What is OEKO-TEX?

Companies that have this certification are dedicated to sustainability, social cohesion, are committed to the environment and reducing green house emissions.

Oeko-Tex supports businesses in acting responsibly and making sustainable decisions.

Textile companies that are under the OEKO-TEX Certification focus on safe and eco-friendly textiles. Oeko-Tex supports companies to identify safer chemicals.

For instance when we buy towels we look on the label for the OEKO-TEX logo.  We have noticed lately; towels especially, have more muted colours due to safer dying processes.  We personally like the beachy vibe of colours that are the lighter versions of themselves.

Tip #8 - Look For Ethical Clothing Brands

When choosing clothing, organic cotton, bamboo, hemp and linen are better choices.  There are some awesome Canadian brands focused on organic materials and sustainability.  Any company that is B Corp Certified is focuses on ethical practices.

Here is a great article form B Corporation’s B Lab that highlights 17 ethical fashion corps.

Tip #9 - Choose Non-Toxic Laundry Detergent

Our bodies were not designed to have to process the many chemicals that are present in our environment.  Our skin is our biggest organ so it is important to protect your skin.  Not only do ingredients in laundry detergent cause irritation on the skin but chemicals in laundry detergent from scents are toxic to the body.  Try to choose brands that are fragrance free and are focused on natural ingredients.

Tip #10 - Choose Organic Tampons

Alot of tampons and pads contain toxic chemicals so it is important to look into the ingredients in your tampons.  If you are unsure of these ingredients you can check the toxicity risk of each ingredient on EWG (Environmental Working Group).

We personally use Organic Tampons.  We only use tampons on the first few heavy flow days of our period.  We use pads for the remainder.  This is one of the many powerful ways you can avoid toxins, especially around sensitive, receptive areas of the body.

Conclusion

A strong immune system aids your body and skin in healing.  Getting better sleep, hydration, reducing toxins and adding antioxidant rich foods in our diet is the key to health maintenance.  When our liver, kidneys, stomach, brain, stress and hydration levels are optimal we aid our body’s in healing.  Our body’s cells respond to the most natural environment free of chemicals.  Our immune system is armed with Natural Killer Cells. If you feed these cells your body’s natural armor will protect you.  A healthy gut is also one of the most amazing tools for health.  A large majority of your immune cells are contained in your gut.
